Christmas waders

Some time in the south of England over Christmas gave the opportunity to study some waders. Firstly on the Somerset Levels I had superb opportunities to sketch snipe and lapwing at the RSPB’s Greylake reserve. The sheer number of birds on the levels here was impressive with huge flocks of lapwing, starling, teal and widgeon. Then on Boxing Day a walk on the Cob at Lyme Regis allowed stunning views of purple sandpipers feeding on the small beach near the end. I sat quietly on the beach and the sandpipers allowed very close observation, especially when the waves drove them towards me.
