Some recent watercolour sketches made in freezing conditions on the North York Moors. I love the moors in winter, browns and ochres contrasting with blue grey winter sky. Birds can be hard to find but in this location I was regularly seeing a small party of Crossbills who were feeding on nearby larch trees. Perhaps surprisingly a small party of Bullfinches was feeding on the heather seeds. There is a challenge in painting in wind and cold which I cannot resist because this is the time for me when the moors are at their most beautiful and solitude in a landscape this vast is easy to find.
